Note: In his Ted Talk, Danny Dorling describe how the Earth had a heart beat if we mapped the changes in rainfall all around the world at monthly intervals and play it on loop. This poem was inspired by this image.

The signs are recognizable;
there is stillness,
and there is silence.

When standing on cool soil,
we don’t feel the uplift of an inhale
so we assume the worst.

Or may be in this case the best,
and we move on, occasionally
acknowledging past life.

How ignorant are we,
to no longer recognize patterns
we have grown accustomed to.

And yet how in tune we are
to the changes in a baseline
that keeps our dance in step.
